Hi! I'm back after being away from pyro for a while. Recently I've been wondering, if there is a good alternative for ball mill. The reason I need an alternative, is because I can't afford to order a ball mill (saving money for chemicals). I would build one for myself, but I can't (no motor, a li...

I have been making fireworks shells since 24 years and still today I dont have ball mill. ... manufacturers use moisture as an aid to incorporation and Estes uses moisture to effect compaction in their rocket motors. Also, I shared my findings with the manufacturer of the hobbyist mill. It could be just coincidence, but their newer mills now have larger diameter jars. You probably won't find actual confirmation of my findings, because most pyros are more interesting in making pyro than making more work for themselves, just for the sake of learning.
For an answer about what kind of ball mill motor, I would recommend reading my post" My Ball Mill": ... It works pretty good for me, and the motor is a 110/220. I'm new at pyro, but not at fabricating tools. I'm too frugal (some say cheap) to buy something when I could build it myself.
. More …

I'm guessing you're not building APCP motor grains and don't need "90" micron, just much finer than the grainy 40-mesh (400 micron) currently available in pound quantities in the US (you can buy any size in bulk). 90 micron is about 175-mesh so unlikely to screen separate with any efficiency (my screens stop at 100-mesh and it's a chore …

While BP has been made without a ball mill for years, professionally a wheel mill is used, early history was the use of a manual stamp mill, there is now no justification for failing to buy the basic minimum rock tumbler, which is usually available for below £100. A charge of suitable lead or ceramic media completes a very satisfactory …

Hey guys I just finished my ball mill. It uses a PM DC 1 phase motor at 14v to achieve my targeted RPM. When the motor is spinning, it has plenty of strength to spin my 40 lb mill jar. Page 1 of 10 - Ball mill designs - posted in Pyro Tools: Hi all,I think this applies to chemistry as it is a process needed for the chemicals of BP...But why are all ball mills designed the same way? I thought I would try it out as a ball mill, so I cast up a large batch of .575" (58 cal) hard round lead balls. The trouble is that 30 pounds of lead balls only fills it to about 1/3 full. I know that it is desirable to have the mill 1/2 full of media.

If you plan on being a pyro long, plan on using lots of anti-static spray. To prevent the mill from being a triboelectric generator, use metal rollers (preferably ground them and the motor as well). I had a little mill for a while that operated like yours, it works but you'll outgrow it quickly.
